Washington Osteopathic Family Medicine Program (WOFMP) Program Synopsis

Program

Application for an Osteopathic internship was submitted to the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) on October 15, 1999, and approved by the AOA on December 20, 1999. Matriculation of the first four interns will occur July 1, 2001. Documents to apply for a subsequent residency program in Family Medicine are reviewed by ACOFP, with approval expected in coming months. The combined internship/residency program is expected to have four doctors in each class, for a total of 12 physicians in training by July 2003. WOFMP will significantly strengthen training resources and expand urgently needed humanitarian care to patients of diverse cultures residing in rural
Washington state.

Mission

WOFMP's mission is to provide medical training encompassing the total health care of individuals and their families, taking into account anatomical, cultural, economic, emotional, environmental, physiological, psychological, sociological, and spiritual factors involved with the patient's medical problem. The teaching environment is oriented to those unique cultural sensitivities appropriate to the Yakima valley.

Sunnyside Community Hospital (SCH), Sunnyside, Washington, serves a rural population that includes 65% Hispanic, 10% Native American, and 24% Anglo residents in a large agricultural valley of south central Washington. The settled population consists of approximately 49,000 residents; however, the area receives an additional 30,000 Hispanic migrant family members who reside locally during the growing season.

We care very much about our patients and receive high marks from them, confirming our efforts.

Our Facility

Sunnyside Community Hospital is a licensed 38 bed acute care hospital, with Level IV Trauma designation (Level III application submitted), serving the Lower Yakima Valley, as well as persons in adjacent Benton and Grant Counties. It is a private, not-for-profit hospital, governed by a local board of trustees and managed under a contract with Brim Health Care of Portland. Both Osteopathic and allopathic physicians practice at the facility. SCH operates an Emergency Department, an Obstetrics unit (averaging 600 births yearly), Outpatient (Same Day) Surgery, Surgery Department, Intensive Care Unit, Medical Surgical Unit, Radiographic Imaging, Laboratory, Respiratory Care, and extensive supportive services. Community education, as well as continuing staff education, are major priorities. The hospital's mission embraces the value that teaching people to get well or stay well is our real job for the future.

New Family Birth Center

SCH is completing a $7.4 million expansion that includes 9 new private single rooms fostering a family oriented and family friendly environment for new births at the hospital. These new labor/delivery/recovery rooms are designed for moms who want to have an "at home" atmosphere with the safety and professionalism of a hospital.

National Recognition

On December 4, 1998, Sunnyside Community Hospital was selected as a National Award Winner, "100 Top Hospitals: Benchmarks for Success Study" conducted by HCIA, the industry's most comprehensive source of health care data. This is the second such award. While 100 hospitals are recognized, only 20 were from the category of fewer than 100 beds, thus placing SCH in the top 20 of the 1,300 hospitals of its size around the United States.
